April 2024, Jon's Journal

Trebah’s garden is absolutely full of colour at present. The wettest spring on record and above average temperatures in recent months might be challenging for us - it’s raining again on Easter Monday as I write - but the plants here are really enjoying it. If you’ve not visited recently I highly recommend doing so soon to make the most of the spring display.

We’ve been out and about over recent weeks. Darren and the garden team recently took some of our blooms down to the Falmouth Spring Flower Show, where we achieved bronze and silver awards in several classes, so congratulations to the team for their efforts and to the organisers for putting on such a well organised and well-attended event. Last week we helped our friends over at Lappa Valley railway open their first new station in thirty years, Trebah Halt.

Next weekend, 6 and 7 April, some of our foliage and blooms will also be making their way to the Cornwall Garden Society Spring show at Wadebridge. The show is always worth visiting and I’m very much looking forward to being there and supporting the Great Gardens of Cornwall there alongside colleagues from gardens around the county.

Back at Trebah work continues on the lodge at the entrance. The building needed slightly more work than we initially anticipated – always the way with older buildings it seems - but we are making good progress with our contractors and hoping to have our first holiday cottage open for guests by the main summer break. We will also soon be starting work to replace at least one of the bridges in the garden, so please bear with us if temporary routes are in place.

A number of new Trebah Members have joined us over recent months, so if you’re reading our newsletter for the first time, then a very warm welcome to you. And thanks to all of you as our members, however new or long-standing, for your ongoing support. I hope we can welcome you to the garden again soon.

Best wishes, Jon
