We made it through half of April without any of the showers!

The lack of rain seems to have helped us have an exceptionally good Magnolia year. The Rhododendrons have also benefitted from the minimised assault of raindrops, leaving a lack of bruising and beautiful blooms.

The Gunnera is quickly filling the valley with its magical green stems reaching for the clouds.  It won’t be long until you can shelter under a giant leaf from the summer sun (or summer downpours!).

Paving the way

You might have noticed the footpath colour changing as you wander around the garden. We are in the process of repairing and re-laying the surface in our new, brighter colour. All this work is done before you arrive in the morning, whilst the garden is still sleeping. It takes 2 gardeners, a tractor and 2 shovels to put down the gravelly mixture, so next time you walk our 4 miles of garden paths, think of our lovely team who’s laying them.

On-going Bamboo Bashing

We are still working our way through each bamboo clump, patiently removing any dead or skinny canes to make room for healthy replacements.
So far, the gardeners are beating the squirrels in a game of survival of the bamboo shoots; we are managing to get ahead by placing a guard over the newly emerging tips.

You may notice a straw-like substance on the ground in the bamboozle, this is the chippings of the dead canes and can act as a mulch and weed suppressant.

Cornwall Flower Show

After our success at the Falmouth Flower Show, we had high hopes for the Cornwall Garden Society Show at the Royal Cornwall Show ground. After scouting out what was still in flower and what had come and gone, we decided on our choices for the 9 flowering vase entry. A van bursting with spring colour made its way up to the show ground, where we chipped and propped everything to make a display to be proud of. With around 14 different flowering shrubs displayed, from Acacia to Azalea, Prostanthera to Prunus, we left feeling proud of our efforts. Sadly, fierce competition led to 3rd on the day but we held our heads high at the stunning array of flowers we are lucky enough to have to pick from here at Trebah; a triumph in itself!

So as the Bluebells begin to replace the Daffodils and the Primroses take centre stage, we continue to embrace the ever-changing abundance of colour on offer here.
