Spring has sprung in Cornwall!

All six of Cornwall’s champion Magnolia campbellii’s now have 50 blooms or more, so on 24th February this year, as is tradition for the Great Gardens Of Cornwall, spring was declared.

Trebah’s magnificent champion magnolia is often one of the first to start blooming and in 2025 ours began coming into flower in January, with over 50 blooms counted on 2nd February by Head Gardener Darren Dickey. Since then we’ve been waiting for the other gardens to catch up, which shows the power of our micro-climate.

After a relatively mild winter, you may be wondering how the 24th February announcement date stacks up against previous years. Well, it’s about a week later than last year, which was 16th Feb, but it’s much earlier than 2015 when spring was announced on 3rd March.
