Hello everyone,
The sunshine is the gift that keeps on giving this year. The gunnera in the valley has grown especially large as a result. Darren gives us the lowdown on that South American wonder in his latest Darren’s Diary video.
As I write to you it is National Volunteers’ Week (2nd – 9th June) and I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to everyone who gives their time to support us at Trebah as a volunteer. We’ve been steadily growing our team of passionate and dedicated volunteers over the last two years – now 64 strong – and we could not operate as we do without them. If you are interested in talking to us about volunteering at Trebah, please get in touch with one of the team.
This month we have welcomed into the garden team Eleanor Gracie from the National Trust’s Sissinghurst Garden in Kent. Eleanor is working with us for a week as part of a gardener exchange programme, set up to help gardeners broaden their knowledge, skills and expereince. Learning from her how a very different, sensitive and high-profile garden copes with up to twelve coaches of visitors a day along its narrow paths is certainly insightful. Gemma Boothroyd, from our garden team, recently spent a week up in Sissinghurst and she tells us about her experiences in the monthly ‘Digging Deep’ gardener’s blog. Very much worth a read.
Last weekend we hosted the annual Military Day event, which is organised by the Parachute Regimental Association, Royal Cornwall Division. Military Day commemorates the sacrifices made by the 7500 Americans who left Polgwidden Cove on 1 June 1944 heading towards Omaha Beach in Normandy on 6th June and all who those who have served in the Military. It’s a rather special day where we are joined by scores of veterans who have served in different branches of the forces. Together they share their stories, enjoy some entertainment and a wreath laying ceremony is held at the memorial near the beach. The story of the D-Day embarkations in the Helford is told within our Story of Trebah Exhibition in the Visitor Centre, well worth having a read of when you next visit.
The theatre season is back and we begin this month by welcoming Four Forty Theatre to our Amphitheatre with Romeo and Juliet on 25th June, followed by many other performances throughout summer which you can browse through on the website. The Beach BBQ’s with music from Will Keating, which we trialled last year, were a real success and the first one of 2025 is due to be held on 27th June.
Thanks, as ever, for your ongoing support as Trebah members. I hope we can welcome you again soon.
Best wishes, Jon
CEO, Trebah Garden
