These are moisture loving perennials with large widely branching inflorescences of white, pink and red flowers.

At Trebah they thrive in the Water Garden. Two notable varieties that grow profusely here each spring are the vivid scarlet Astilbe 'Fanal' (x arendsii) and the creamy white Astilbe 'Deutschland'.
