Storm Goretti swept through Cornwall this week, with wind speeds of over 100mph and, like many gardens across the county, Trebah felt its effects. While it’s always sad to see the garden take a hit, we wanted to share an update on how the garden has fared – and there is plenty of good news alongside the challenges.

The bad news first: on first inpection of the garden, it looks like we have lost around 30 trees, mainly from the perimeter of the garden, with approximately 10 of these being large, mature specimens. While any loss is significant, this number represents only a tiny fraction of the many trees that make up our sheltered valley.

The good news is that the vast majority of Trebah has come through the storm remarkably well. Thanks in large part to our location within a sheltered valley, much of the garden was protected from the worst of Storm Goretti’s winds. In fact, looking down the valley you would barely know a storm had passed through!

For safety reasons, the garden itself will remain closed until further notice while our team works to clear fallen trees and debris from the paths. This work is essential to ensure the garden can reopen safely for everyone.

However, we’re pleased to say that the Visitor Centre, Trebah Kitchen and shops are open as usual from Sunday 11 January, and we’d love to see you there.

Finally, the whole team would like to say a big thank you for all the supportive messages and kind comments we’ve received over the past few days. Your encouragement means a great deal as we begin the clear-up and look ahead to welcoming you back into the garden as soon as it’s safe to do so.

We’ll continue to share updates as and when we can – thank you for your patience and support.
