Moth Morning
Discover the remarkable diversity of moth species at Trebah in this engaging sunrise session with Dr Will Hawkes
Join Dr Will Hawkes early in the morning to discover some of our incredible nighttime animals, the moths. See their amazing colours, marvel at their adaptations, learn to recognise their names, explore their hidden lives and uncover the fascinating stories behind these often-overlooked night-time pollinators
Meet at first light before heading out to check the moth traps set the previous evening. As the gardens begin to stir, you’ll gather around the trap to discover which nocturnal visitors have been recorded overnight.
Dr Will Hawkes will guide you through the process of identifying the moths as well as how to manage your own moth trap and record your findings so that your observations can contribute to wider citizen science initiatives.
If moth numbers are low, the morning will continue with a gentle nature walk through Trebah.
Will Hawkes is an insect research scientist, photographer and storyteller. He grew up in the wilds of Northeast Wales surrounded by the natural world and moved down to Cornwall ten years ago to begin his academic journey. No material prerequisites but do bring a camera or a notebook to record these animals if you would like to.
