Camellia
 • Tea family (Theaceae).
• These are beautiful flowering evergreen shrubs and trees which originate in China, Japan and neighbouring countries. Garden forms are derived from only a few species, but with many thousand hybrid varieties. The leaves of one species, Camellia sinensis, are dried to make tea.
• Trebah has a large and varied collection of camellias. They start flowering before Christmas (Camellia sasanqua ‘Hugh Evans’, and Camellia japonica ‘Nobilissima’) and continue until mid summer.

Rhododendron
• Heather family (Ericaceae).
• Most of the garden rhododendrons originated in China and the Himalayas, and they have been extensively hybridised.
• Trebah has a large collection of rhododendrons including the highly scented R. x loderi, which start flowering before Christmas and continue until mid summer. Of particular interest are the local hybrids ‘Trebah Gem’ and ‘Glory of Penjerrick’, the collection of 100 year old Rhododendron arboreum which grow to 60 feet tall and dominate Rhododendron Valley, and the huge fragrant flowers of Rhododendron x loderi ‘King George’.

Hydrangea
• Hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae).
• There are many garden varieties of Hydrangea derived from plants originally from Japan and China. The colour of the flower can change with the acidity of the soil-blue flowers indicate an acid soil, and pink flowers a neutral soil.
• If you visit Trebah in mid to late summer, you will see a particularly impressive display of two acres of blue, white and pink hydrangeas. Some are also sweetly scented.

daffodil
• Amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae).
• Over 30,000 daffodil bulbs have been planted in Chilean Coomb to make a visit in early spring a memorable experience.

bluebell
• Lily family (Liliaceae).
• The bluebell is the classic flower of ancient woodland. It carpets areas of the garden in spring, and contrasts with the white flowers of Ramsons (Wild Garlic) and Three-Cornered Leek.

agapanthus
• Onion family (Alliaceae).
• These evergreen perennials come originally from South Africa, and thrive in the hot summers and warm winters of Cornwall. They produce large heads of spectacular blue flowers.

magnolia
• Magnolia family (Magnoliaceae).
• These magnificent spring-flowering trees from America and East Asia are thought to belong to one of the oldest flowering plant families. Chilean Comb is dominated by a beautiful Magnolia campbellii.

fuchsia
• Willowherb family (Onagraceae).
• These are shrubs and small trees from Central and South America and New Zealand, mainly with attractive red and purple pendant flowers.

acacia
• Pea family (Leguminosae).
• These trees & shrubs come mainly from Australia, where they are known as Wattles because early settlers used them for ‘wattle & daub’ housing.
• Early spring at Trebah is considerably enhanced by the beautiful yellow flowers of Acacia pravissima and Acacia dealbata.
