Hello everyone,
A very Happy New Year to you from all the team here at Trebah.
For many this is the time for a New Year’s resolution. Some of us will embark on dry-January, identify that we will learn a new skill, lose weight, stop smoking or start planning holidays. I don’t always join in, knowing that sometimes just writing the correct year when dating something can be enough of a challenge for my post-twixtmas brain. This year however, I’ve decided to take a photo of Trebah every day from a different location or angle. A great excuse to get away from the desk and explore the beauty to be found in Trebah’s hidden corners. If you’ve made a resolution, whatever it is, I hope you achieve what you want to.
At Trebah, after being named ‘8th best garden in the world’ in 2024, we simply resolve to continue being known as one of the best gardens in the world.
Out in the garden the gunnera is already sprouting, lots of camellias are flowering with a huge number of new buds on the way. Down by Alice’s Seat, the sarcococca is coming into flower – Darren talks more about this in his diary this month. Both the staff and volunteers on Darren’s garden team have begun the mammoth task of hydrangea pruning, which is all consuming in the next two months. January is also the time when we carry out most of our tree surgery. Sadly, this year we need to say goodbye to one of our well-known trees, the tulip tree near to the Visitor Centre, which has honey fungus.
During 2025 we will be continuing the popular run of talks by horticulturalists, exhibitions by artists and telling some of our own stories in the gallery within the Visitor Centre. Along with a host of events in the amphitheatre and beach during the warmer months. We will also soon reveal some details a new partnership with the Cornwall National Landscape (former AONB), so keep an eye out for that.
Don’t forget to make the most of your reciprocal entry deals this month. All the more important if you’re planning to get out and about from 20th – 22nd January when we close Trebah in its entirety for annual maintenance.
Here’s to a healthy and successful 2025. Thanks, as ever, for your support.
Best wishes, Jon
