Five businesses represent Cornwall in 'the Oscars of tourism':

FIVE popular Cornish Businesses are calling for the county to show their support as they represent the Duchy in the VisitEngland awards this May

After a rotten start to the year, Gwel an Mor Resort, Hell Bay Hotel, Little White Alice, the Pandora Inn and Trebah Garden are hoping to turn it golden by inviting friends, family, visitors and holidaymakers alike to tweet their messages of good luck at #GoteamCornwall.

With disrupted travel, no rail link and pounding seas reshaping the coastline, tourism looked bleak prompting the 'Cornwall is Open for Business' campaign by VisitCornwall. Reassuringly many businesses managed to weather the storms whilst applying to be considered for the national awards.

The five businesses all know that they will take away an accolade from the award ceremony - considered the Oscars of the tourism industry - what is left to find out is whether this will be gold, silver, bronze or a highly commended achievement.

Gwel an Mor, the five-star lodge resort in Portreath will compete in the Holiday Park / Holiday Village of the Year Category, a category it won in 2012.

Owner Bill Halsam said: "This year's awards feels different for us, there is a far stronger feeling of camaraderie among tourism businesses in Cornwall at present. You will find many new collaborations as many have had to diversify to cope with the lack of travel network, or to combat a drop in visitor numbers.

It is fantastic to shine a beacon for Cornwall to let people know, that not only are we 'Open for Business', but we are also still providing the best quality, diversity and award-winning service that tourists have come to expect from Cornwall. We are looking forward to spending a great evening celebrating our successes as a county."

Hell Bay Hotel, on Bryher in the Isle of Scilly, has been selected in the Small Hotel of the Year Category, general manager Philip Callan said: "We are delighted to have made it through to the finals and are proud to represent the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall."

In Redruth, Little White Alice hopes in scoop gold in the Sustainable Tourism Award having already secured Gold at both at the Cornwall and the South West Tourism Awards. Director Rosie Hadden says: "We work hard to give our guests a more sustainable holiday experience in the hope that they will return home and adapt some of our ideas in their everyday life. Collaborations with other local businesses is at the heart of what we offer and we are delighted that Cornwall is leading the way in terms of great quality and sustainability within the tourism network"

The Pandora Inn in Mylor is flying the flag in the Tourism Pub of the Year. John Milan & Steve Bellman, landlords of the Pandora Inn said "We are absolutely thrilled that the Pandora is being recognised at a national level for its excellent food, welcoming atmosphere and the contribution it makes to the tourism industry in Cornwall. Catherine, Lester, Tom and all the team have done a fantastic job running the pub and putting so much effort into making it a success."

Finally, one of Cornwall's gems, Trebah Garden near Mawnan Smith competes in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year. "I am delighted that we have been shortlisted and will be receiving recognition at the forthcoming VisitEngland Awards." says Nigel Burnett, Trebah's Director "To be selected to represent not only Cornwall but the whole South West of England in the Large Visitor Attraction category is a testimony to Trebah's staff, our passion for service excellence and to the reputation we have built over many years."

The group hopes that Cornwall will get behind them in wishing them luck for the awards in May - don't forget to tweet #goteamcornwall to show your support.
