Abelia
• Honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae).
• These are shrubs from Mexico & E Asia. Abelia floribunda produces abundant cerise-coloured flowers, and Abelia x grandiflora produces whitish fragrant flowers.

 

Drimys
• Family Winteraceae.
• Drimys winteri, “Winter’s Bark”, from Chile, is named after Captain Winter one of Sir Francis Drake’s officers, who found the bark very effective against scurvy. It is an evergreen tree with fragrant creamy-white flowers.
• Drimys lanceolata, “Pepper tree”, comes from Australia. It is an aromatic shrub—its dried fruits have been used as a pepper substitute.

  Libertia
• Iris family (Iridaceae).
• Libertia grandiflora from New Zealand is an evergreen perennial with white triangular flowers.
  Eucryphia
• Eucryphia family (Eucryphiaceae).
• Highly ornamental trees & shrubs with large showy white flowers from Chile and Australia.
 

Candelabra Primula
• Primrose family (Primulaceae).
• These tall moisture-loving primulas with whorls of red or yellow flowers come from China and the Himalayas, and light up the Water Garden in early summer.

  Pieris
• Heather family (Ericaceae).
• These are highly ornamental, dense-growing evergreen shrubs with flowers resembling Lily-of-the-Valley.
•Pieris formosa from the Himalayas has spectacular scarlet-tinged new leaves, and we have one unidentified Pieris which is extremely fragrant.
  Zantedeschia
• Arum family (Araceae).
• Zantedeschia aethiopica comes from South Africa and its spectacular large white trumpet flowers & glossy green leaves make a magnificent display in the Water Garden & other damp places in early summer.  Zantedeschia ‘Green Goddess’ is an unusual variety with green & white flowers.
  Salvia
• Mint family (Labiatae).
• These popular garden plants are often aromatic. Salvia confertifolia from Brazil has whorls of beautiful deep-red flowers, and Salvia rutilans has pineapple scented leaves.
  Prostanthera
• Mint family (Labiatae).
• Prostanthera, the Australian Mint Bush, has showy flowers and very aromatic leaves.
