Dogwood family (Cornaceae).
Davidia involucrata, The Pocket Handkerchief or Ghost Tree, comes from
China, and gets its name from the enormous large white bracts which surround
the flower. There is a beautiful example at the bottom of Chilean Coomb. |

Mallow family (Malvaceae).
Hoheria sexstylosa, Ribbon Wood, is a small tree from New Zealand with
pure white flowers. Early settlers used the inner bark for rope. |

Rose family (Rosaceae).
Exochorda x macrantha 'The Bride', is a beautiful shrub with large white
flowers. |

Gevuina
Protea family (Proteacae).
Gevuina avellana, the Chilean Hazel, is a small tree from Chile with white
flowers and large red cherry-like fruit. |

Corylopsis
Witch Hazel family (Hamamelidaceae).
These are beautiful deciduous shrubs from China and Japan with fragrant
pale yellow pendulous flowers appearing just before the leaves.

Echium
Borage family (Boraginaceae).
The spectacular Echium pininana sends up a 2-3m spike of densely-packed
mauve flowers, while Echium fastuosum has a smaller spike of beautiful blue flowers.
Both plants come from the Canary Islands. |

Protea family (Proteaceae).
These evergreen shrubs from Australia and South America have attractive
foliage and flowers.
Lomatia ferrugina is a magnificent foliage plant from the rain forests
of Chile, and Lomatia myricoides from Australia has white flowers similar to
Grevillea. |

Berberis
Berberis family (Berberidaceae).
Berberis darwinii from Chile is one of the finest of all flowering shrubs
with bright orange flowers. |

Puya
Bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae).
Puyas are native to the high Andes. They grow at higher altitude than
other bromeliads and are tolerant of high winds, drought and low temperatures.
The flowering stems grow to 3m, and have the most striking green or blue
flower colours. |
